DOG BEHAVIOUR CONSULTATIONS

Dog Behaviour Consultations

What is the difference between Dog Training and Behaviour?

Most people are unsure about what the difference is between the two. When unwanted behaviour comes up in your dog the first thing people do is seek a dog trainer or dog school to try and sort it out. These problem behaviours cannot be solved in a training class or on a training level alone. Behaviour problems are much deeper rooted issues that are causing your dog’s bad or strange behaviour.  These need to be dealt with by a Qualified Animal Behaviourist.

Dog Training

Training a dog involves teaching of verbal cues and/ or hand signals to your dog. With training one works to improve the communication, strengthen the bond and create respect between you and your dog. Examples of cues are: Sit, down, stand, stay, heel, recall, roll-over etc.

Behaviour Problems

Behavior problems are deeper rooted issues and cannot be resolved in a training class, as it needs to be dealt with on a much deeper level. I look at that individual dog’s history, type and breed of dog, personality and most importantly their underlying emotional state to try and resolve a behavioral issue. These are things like: Resource guarding. (over protective or aggressive around his food bowl, certain places or people), excessive barking, tail chasing, separation related issues, destructive behaviours, Reactiveness: (reactive towards other dogs and/or people) and aggression.

How does a dog consultation work?

1. Pre-Consult

You will be asked to fill in and return a Pre-consult form before the appointment. Sign up can be done online below.

2. Consulation

With behaviour consultations we will start with the initial Consultation where I come to you to get as much information as possible about the situation and to observe your dog in his/her normal surroundings.

3. Report

After the consultation I will send you a Report and in cases relevant I will work out a Behaviour Modification Program for your dog. In cases where the Behaviour Modification Program is needed, a follow up session will be done to go through the program with you and to put it in place.

4. Follow Up

With behaviour consultations it is important to remember there is no ‘quick fixes’ or guarantees and your involvement, time, effort and implementation of the programs is very important.
